Benefits of breathing work

YUMM! Hello to Happy

Breathing work has been used for a long time by a variety of different cultures. This process is simple and involves breathing in a systemic or conscious pattern and is a great habit to incorporate into your daily life. It will help you focus and re-balance, but it may also be able to help with treating mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and grief.

Another great aspect of breathing work is that there is a wide variety of methods, so, you will be able to find one that works best for you. At Yumm, we recommend diaphragmatic breathing. Watch the video below to see how it works!

Personal Trainer and Wellness Coach Bladen Baird is another advocate for breathing exercises and performs them at least 2-3 times a week himself.

“Diaphragmatic breathing is an effective non-pharmacological intervention for emotional control and mood enhancement. You also have the associated benefits of reductions of symptoms in anger, anxiety and depression, to name a few”.

If the benefits sound great to you (and they should!), the next step is deciding the most suitable time to implement breathing exercises. It will depend entirely on your own circumstances and the benefits you hope to gain from it. Take a look at the list we made with Bladen’s help below and see what best applies to you. Good luck!

When should you use it?

  • For recovery: Use it as a cool down to return to the parasympathetic state.
  • During times of mental illness: You can use it when you are suffering a mental health moment, such as anxiety, depression, anger etc. to try and balance yourself and re-centre.
  • Before bed: A flow-on effect of reduced anxiety may be an improved ability to fall asleep.
  • After waking up: Diaphragmatic breathing can be a powerful tool to centre your thoughts and sharpen your focus for the day ahead.

Bladen was fantastic to speak to and provided great insight for this blog. We highly recommend finding him on Instagram for regular motivational and informational content! He is also available for in person sessions at the integrated health and performance clinic Healthfix in North Sydney!
